This course is designed to give students an understanding of the attitudes and behavior of individuals and groups within all types of organizations, and as to how organizations, simple or complex, are structured and patterned to achieve their goals. Because the non-profit and sport sectors are primarily services, the environment is not a primary issue. The ethical environment of these sectors includes sustainability, environmental conservation and other practices as norms.

This course will provide a basic understanding of the planning process in developing and designing sport, arts and cultural facilities. Studied are the major functions of resource planning, principles, terminology and standards for facilities using the specialized techniques related to these facilities. The course will examine in detail the central tenets or organizational and management theory and how it applies to sport, arts and cultural facilities. The course will deal with organizational and human resources theories and their relation to these facilities. Moreover, this course will give students a brief overview of the role that economics, financial management, marketing, and fund-raising play in the continual development of skilled managers interested in sport, arts and cultural facilities.

Course Name: Public Relations and Fund Raising for Not-for-Profit Organizations (GDSA/GDIA 642)

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to a variety of fund raising methods, provide the context in which these methods might be used, and provide an understanding of how fund raising operates within the Canadian voluntary sector. Each student selects a registered charity for in-depth analysis and discusses their chosen charity throughout the course in class discussions. A significant part of classroom time consists of discussions of issues and experience related to fund raising and public relations. Students are required to conduct and prepare a mini-development audit including a detailed analysis of the selected charity’s fund raising and public relations activities along with specific recommendations for improvement of the organization’s development function.
