In the school's own words...
At Duquesne University’s Donahue Graduate School of Business, we prepare business leaders who are capable of transforming organizations, communities and the world. We challenge our students to reach their full potential while reflecting on our university’s century-long commitment to ethics and service, excellence and innovation. Accredited by AACSB-International since 1962, the Donahue School offers current and managerially relevant MBA curricula for full-time students and working professionals.
Our full-time, daytime program, the MBA Sustainability, explicitly focuses on managing social, environmental and financial capital for prosperity today, without compromising resources for tomorrow. This selective, accelerated MBA integrates rigorous coursework in all traditional business disciplines with best practices in sustainability. The innovative 12-month delivery model provides a signature graduate experience through cross-functional teaching, practical consulting projects, international study trips, and professional skill development.
MBA Sustainability students examine multiple stakeholder perspectives throughout the curriculum. Early in the program, they take Applied Ethics and learn a framework for future decision-making. They hone problem-solving skills in Systems Thinking, a course that explores cutting-edge techniques for triple bottom line accountability. While taking foundation courses in marketing, finance, accounting, data management and economics, students apply business fundamentals to assignments for Environmental Science and Sustainability Topics. Social and environmental responsibility themes recur in Public Affairs, Organizational Behavior, Value Chain and Operations, Marketing, Strategy, and Leading Change Management courses. The curriculum features two international excursions to inspect practices and customs in Europe, Asia and South America, and students take Global Economics at a partnering university abroad.
Practical consulting projects anchor all three semesters in the MBA Sustainability program. Students make immediate impact for their corporate and not-for-profit clients by solving contemporary problems. Examples include calculating carbon footprints, identifying new product risks, and measuring ROI for retrofitting buildings and reducing waste. Student project management resources include faculty coaches from Duquesne’s business and professional schools; leaders from business, government and not-for-profit organizations; and technical advisors from our Centers for Applied Ethics, Environmental Research and Education, Executive Education, and Small Business Development.
A significant proportion of evening MBA students carry full-time course loads, often while serving as graduate assistants. Full-time evening students take required Applied Ethics and Public Affairs Management courses as well as two core courses - Understanding the Value Chain and Managing a Diverse Workforce - that exemplify our holistic approach to integrating ethics, corporate governance and resource management. Evening students also address social and environmental responsibility through case studies and class projects in electives.
Full-time MBA students, both daytime and evening, may choose from a range of electives to earn a concentration. Environmental science, ethics, supply chain and investment finance are popular concentrations that nurture lifelong commitment to social and environmental responsibility.
MBA students at Duquesne interface regularly with international thought leaders, corporate executives and alumni advisors at our annual sustainability symposium, executive speaker series, and ethics luncheons. They are active members of Net Impact, Evergreen, the Donahue Business Society and our MBA Competition Team. Our Sustainability Fellows and Graduate Assistants support faculty research projects and co-author papers for publication.
